While technically not in Asheville, Black Mountain is only 18 minutes away.  Owned and operated by a hands-on local couple, Richard and Heidi King, Pure and Proper is located on the edge of town in an old Pure Oil Company gas station artfully converted into a very cozy restaurant.  The menu is typically southern with many fried items but they do offer healthy alternatives.  My favorite item on the menu is a large serving of Brussels Sprouts topped with whipped ricotta, tomato jam and spiced cashews.  I usually order that for lunch with a glass or two of French Muscadet wine and call it a day.   The Pickled Pear Grilled Cheese sandwich and the Fried Chicken Waffle are also in high demand.  For dinner, the most popular items are the Romaine Wedge, Yellowfin Tuna Tartare, Duck Leg Confit and Braised Short Ribs.
