One of Asheville’s oldest and most revered dinner destinations, The Market Place opened its doors in 1978. With the help of its many loyal patrons, it survived the tumult brought on by the various economic cycles and the Covid pandemic and continues to thrive among the many fine eating establishments that have claimed their share of the market over the years.  Acquired 15 years ago by the current owner and awarded chef, William Dissen, The Market Place is the definitive farm-to-table restaurant in downtown.  Chef Dissen is the consummate hands-on restauranteur and is 100%  committed to sourcing and serving locally grown and foraged ingredients culminating in a true upscale Appalachian influenced dining experience.  His rather simple high quality ingredients are taken to a higher level such as the pickled blueberries that explode in your mouth with a savory essence as opposed to the fruity sweetness one would expect, or the extra thick side of perfectly cooked skin-on Sunburst Farms trout served over creamed peas, sauté of spinach and tasso ham presented in a basic cast iron skillet.  The brick chicken is plump and juicy and the wide ribbons of hand-cut pappardelle served with braised lamb are a delight.  The wine list is extensive, and the servers are professional and quite well-versed on the menu and ingredients.  Tucked away on Wall Street in the epicenter of downtown The Market Place is within a short walk from almost every hot spot in town.  We found that taking in the sunset down the street at the Flat Iron Hotel rooftop bar was the perfect prelude to a wonderful evening at The Market Place.
