Berliner Kindl is a step back in time.  I traveled through Germany quite a bit during the 80’s and every  small mountain town I visited in Bavaria had at least one or two of these quaint family-owned  restaurants where the Helles pale ale flows freely from the tap and the smell of sizzling wurst and tangy sauerkraut fight for dominance among the heaping plates of schnitzel and thick layers of corned beef piled high on imported German rye bread on the way to becoming a world-class Reuben. Berliner Kindl is exactly this kind of place and Black Mountain is the perfect setting.   Ten different sausage plates are on the menu and a choice of 5 schnitzels,  all include 2 sides of either; sauerkraut, German potato salad, cucumber salad, red cabbage, spätzle, or home fries.  They also offer 10 different sandwiches and a killer pork chop.  The German imported beer list is extensive so don’t expect the usual local craft beers.  Several German wines are offered but I find most of them too fruity or sweet.  They do have a short list of California wines so all the bases are covered.  The desserts are all very tempting, but I can personally vouch for the apple strudel covered with whipped cream and the Black Forest Cake.  This is authentic, wholesome, hearty, comfort food which we all need from time to time.
