Located downtown beneath the Aloft Hotel, Black Bird is a really cool neighborhood restaurant and bar. The food is best described as locally sourced “modern southern food”. Very seasonal. They strive to get the best produce from local farmers, fresh catches from the coast of the Carolinas, the top local micro-brews and a very diverse but generally well-priced wine selection. The Charcuterie Board is sizable and enough for a party of four. The Arugula Salad of local greens, Poached Pear, Pickled Red Onions, Spiced Pecans, Blue Cheese, Pear Vinaigrette Wine Reduction is to die for. The steaks are as good as you will find and the fish is fresh and well prepared. On my third visit I discovered Seafood Pirlau which is a heavenly combination of PEI Mussels, Shrimp, Crawfish, Sausage, Spiced Rice Cake, Spiced Tomato Broth and Bell Peppers. If you like spicey food, I can’t recommend this dish highly enough. Don’t get me started on the deserts, all made in house. Black Bird is top drawer. If you are lucky enough to get Alyssa as your advisor/server, your stars will have aligned.
