Japanese soul food meets southern style BBQ. The two chef/co-owners have extensive international resumes and have created what I consider to be one of top restaurants in Asheville. The bartenders are really good dudes who know the menu well if you decide to sir their for dinner. My favorites include; the Iceberg Wedge dressed with sesame dressing, nashi pear & nori, Pork & Shitake Mushroom Gyoza, Veggie Ramin with yuzu shio broth, bok choy, shitake mushroom & soft boiled egg, Baby Bok Choi with sesame-ginger dressing & charred lemon, and the Sea Bass in brown butter ponzu, grilled lemon & sea salt. The coconut cake is better than most. I have dined at Ukiah at least 8 or 9 times and finally ordered the Chef’s Tasting Menu which included a 10 course sampling of his most popular items for $65.00. There were four of us and all agreed that each course was better than the last. Actually, we were blown away. I can’t wait to do it again. Ukiah is located next door to the Orange Peel and a lot of folks go there for diner before a concert, which makes parking a bitch. I use Uber. Call ahead for reservations as the place books up just about every night. Otherwise sit at the bar which usually has an opening or two.
